If you are planning to build a mobile app in 2025, one of the first decisions you will face is: Flutter or React Native? Both are cross-platform frameworks that let you build iOS and Android apps from a single codebase, but they differ significantly in performance, ecosystem, and ideal use cases.

What is Flutter?

Flutter is Google's open-source UI toolkit, built with the Dart programming language. Instead of using native UI components, Flutter renders its own widgets using the Skia graphics engine, giving pixel-perfect consistency across all platforms — iOS, Android, Web, and Desktop.

What is React Native?

React Native is Meta's (Facebook's) framework that uses JavaScript and React to build mobile apps. Unlike Flutter, React Native uses actual native UI components on each platform, which means your app can look and feel truly native to iOS or Android.

Performance

Flutter generally outperforms React Native in animation-heavy and graphics-intensive applications due to its direct rendering engine. React Native has improved dramatically with the new architecture (JSI and Fabric), but still has a slight overhead from the JavaScript bridge on older versions.

Developer Experience

If your team knows JavaScript and React, React Native has a much shallower learning curve. Flutter requires learning Dart, which is less common — but Dart is clean, fast to pick up, and the Flutter documentation is outstanding.

Ecosystem and Libraries

React Native benefits from the massive JavaScript and npm ecosystem. Flutter's pub.dev package ecosystem is smaller but growing rapidly and tends to be higher quality due to stricter publishing standards.

Which Should You Choose?

  • Choose Flutter if you need a highly polished, performant UI with consistent branding across iOS and Android, or if you plan to target web and desktop in addition to mobile.
  • Choose React Native if your team is already proficient in JavaScript/React, if you need deep integration with native device features, or if you are building on top of an existing web codebase.
