Ask ChatGPT to recommend a web development company in India. Ask Perplexity what a Laravel project should cost. Ask Claude whether a particular agency is any good.
People are doing this now, in growing numbers, at exactly the point in the buying process where they used to open Google. The difference is that the answer arrives as a short recommendation rather than ten blue links — and if your business is not among the sources that answer was built from, you were never in the running.
You will not see it in your analytics either. There is no impression to report on. You simply are not there.
AI Engine Optimisation is the work of making sure you are.
What AIEO actually is
AIEO is structuring your content so AI assistants can do four things with it:
- Find it — the crawlers can reach and read your pages
- Understand it — the content is unambiguous about who you are and what you do
- Trust it — what you say is consistent with what is said about you elsewhere
- Quote it — the content is in a shape that is safe to lift into an answer
That last point is the one people miss. A language model composing an answer needs statements that stand on their own. A sentence that only makes sense after reading three paragraphs of preamble is hard to quote. A clear factual claim with a specific number is easy.
How this differs from SEO
They share a foundation. A fast, well-structured, genuinely useful site does well at both. But the target differs in a way that changes priorities.
SEO competes for position. You want to be the third link rather than the thirteenth. Backlinks, keyword targeting and domain authority drive it.
AIEO competes for citation. There is no position — there is one answer, drawn from a handful of sources. What makes a source usable is clarity, specificity, structure and consistency.
The practical consequence: a page that is vague but well-linked can rank well and never get cited. A page that is precise, factual and well-structured can get cited despite modest authority. That asymmetry is currently a real opportunity for smaller businesses.
What the work involves
Make the content machine-readable
Schema.org structured data — Organization, LocalBusiness, Service, FAQPage, Article, BreadcrumbList — implemented as one connected graph with stable identifiers, so a crawler can resolve who published a page without guessing.
FAQ markup deserves particular attention. A question paired with a direct answer is precisely the shape an assistant wants. It is the single highest-leverage structured data type for this purpose.
Write in statements that survive extraction
Compare:
Our team has extensive experience delivering scalable enterprise solutions across a variety of verticals.
with:
We built a pharmacy delivery platform with 1,184 database migrations and 425 domain models, serving four separate user portals.
The first says nothing an assistant could responsibly repeat. The second is a specific, checkable claim. Specificity is what makes content quotable.
Consolidate your entity
Your business name, address, phone number and service description should be identical across your website, LinkedIn, Google Business Profile and every directory you appear in. Inconsistency lowers confidence, and low confidence means no citation. This is unglamorous data-hygiene work and it matters more than it sounds.
Let the AI crawlers in
Check your robots.txt. Many sites block GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and
Google-Extended — sometimes deliberately, often because a plugin default did it
and nobody noticed.
There is a genuine argument for blocking them if your content is your product. For a business whose website is a marketing asset, blocking them removes the only route by which an assistant can recommend you, and protects content that is already public. That trade rarely makes sense.
Publish an llms.txt
A plain-text file at your domain root summarising your business, your key pages and your contact details. The convention is young and not universally consumed, but it takes an hour to produce and removes ambiguity for the agents that do read it. Ours is here.
Make sure the content is in the HTML
This one is technical and frequently fatal. Many AI crawlers do not execute JavaScript. If your site renders its content client-side — a typical single-page React application — those crawlers may receive an effectively empty page.
You can have excellent content and be entirely invisible. Check by fetching your page without JavaScript and reading what comes back.
What nobody can promise you
No one controls what a language model outputs. There is no submission process, no paid placement, no technical lever that guarantees a mention. Any provider offering guaranteed AI recommendations is selling something that does not exist.
The honest position is that AIEO is a young discipline built on reasonable inference rather than a decade of measured results. What is well established is the direction — accessibility, clarity, structure and consistency are what make citation possible.
Why act now rather than later
The volume of AI-referred traffic today is small relative to organic search. If you judge purely on current numbers, it is easy to dismiss.
The argument for acting now is competitive rather than volumetric. Very few businesses in most sectors have done any of this. The ones that structure their content well over the next year become the default sources their industry gets cited from — and that position, once established, is difficult for a latecomer to displace.
It is roughly where SEO was in 2005. The cost of entry is low and it will not stay that way.
Where to start
- Fetch your site with JavaScript disabled and confirm the content is there
- Check
robots.txtis not blocking AI crawlers by accident - Add FAQ structured data to your main service pages
- Replace vague claims with specific, checkable statements
- Make your business details identical everywhere they appear
- Publish an
llms.txt
None of that requires a large budget. It requires someone who can change the site.
If you would rather hand it over, AI Engine Optimisation is one of our services — and this site is built to the standard we describe.
